GUIDE TO THE AFON MARTEG

NAME OF RIVER: Marteg.

WHERE IS IT?: Near Llangurig, mid Wales. Close to the classic Llangurig to Rhayader section of the Wye.

PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: Unknown.

APPROX LENGTH: 2 km.

TIME NEEDED: Unknown.

ACCESS HASSLES: It is now a protected environment and is an otter sanctuary. It has wardens that patrol it - 2000 max fine for paddling! Gulp! Allegedly it can still be run at first light in the spring and before 6am when the Env Agency staff begin work- but I wouldn't know about that!

WATER LEVEL INDICATORS:

GRADING: 3 (5).

MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: The gorge.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Grade 3 with a grade 5 gorge leading into the Wye.
