GUIDE TO WATER OF DEUCH
NAME OF RIVER: Water of Deuch.
WHERE IS IT?: Galloway near A713 just N of Carsphairn. Map.
PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS:PUT IN end of minor road GR 557.015.
TAKE OUT A713 road bridge GR 557.946 or B729 anywhere by the river or N end of loch.
APPROX LENGTH: 8 km.
TIME NEEDED: 1 hour - it flows fast!!
ACCESS HASSLES: Not known. rarely paddled, so probably no problems.
WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: At the TAKE OUT bridge...can you float? Yes? Do it!
This river rises and falls quickly. The more water the better, there can't be too much!
MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: Nasty 3 m weir at forestry bridge, marked 'sluice' on the OS map. Many ledges with blocks on. Portage river left.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A river that never stops- there is always some interest though it is never hard. Would be a tricky open boat run due to the many small rocks.
Class 2-3 to begin, you will see rapids from road as you drive to the put in. The many rocks need to be covered by water.
After the road leaves the river bank, Class 2 to forest edge, old farm house and caravans on banks. Some interesting sections.
After leaving the forest behind, rapids gradually increase in size and difficulty. River banks close in and swifter flows are found. Class 3 with some more tricky rapids in a small gorge just before the egress.
Paddled solo, Oct 2006.
OTHER NOTES: Try walking up the forest track from the put in if you want more.
The ever flowing outfall from Loch Doon is only a few miles away. A classy LITTLE grade 3 gorge, to make a day of it.
