GUIDE TO THE RIVER AIRE

(Aire Wave)

NAME OF RIVER: Aire Wave

WHERE IS IT?: Near Oulton, to the South East of Leeds.

PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: From the A639 take the A642 and turn right down Fleet Lane. Follow the road over the Aire and Calder Navigation and park at the end next to the Oil Storage Depot at SE381283 (Multimap). Walk along the path SSE, beside the Aire, downstream to the weir. Directions on Google Maps.

APPROX LENGTH: Playspot.

TIME NEEDED: As long as you like!

ACCESS HASSLES: Unknown.

WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: Getting the right level is essential, as if it is too high it forms a walled-in hole. See photos for right and wrong levels!

The wave will run from 1.35m on the Fleet Weir online gauge.

GRADING: Playwave.

MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: Dangerous if too high. Pollution may cause sickness!

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: In the right levels this forms a very big glassey wave - enjoy!

OTHER NOTES: Remember to keep your mouth closed!

Anyone got any more info on this?

I'd like to put a guide to the wave in the new edition of English White Water, but having a lump of steel cable in the way may be worth mentioning!

Cheers for the update Dave, sadly most of the Leeds Uni bunch had headed up into the hills for some river running. Hopefully catch you there soon weather permitting.
