Just a quick heads up, the edge of madness has been paddled, madness has also had a couple of descents. The double slide after madness is one of the most fun/ intense rapids around. The only drop not to have been paddled is the thirty footer after this. I was in there last year at a good level and this portage did look like it would go. But as there were only the two of us we portaged left and put on below. A truly incredible paddle, through one of the most incredible and beautiful gorges/ glens in the country. Shame it had a dam....

You actually got a good level on this run? Please tell how! I've been in this area when the garry is on massive release and driven up here to still find it dry. Does it have freshet releases or do you just have to get lucky?

How we got it on a good level was by total luck. I paddle in that area a lot. There was a lot of water about. The dam was spilling slightly and the hillsides were awash with burns, just total luck. In the 20 years since I first paddled it the gorge has changed a lot. The Chossy rapid at the entrance to the gorge used to be steeper, but equally as horrible. More rocks have shifted at the bottom of Sparta and the drop below that has collapsed slightly. But still great. There used to be quite regular freshet releases, but they don't seem to happen very often anymore. Really is a shame as its incredible. I've never portages Sparta on river right. Always up a wee V-diff climb on river left. Id always recommend this section to people, if anything, just to experience such a stunning place. Dog falls has been paddled but is very level dependant. It goes when you wouldn't really want to paddle the rest of the gorge- too high-. If you charge hard left and get a flying boof with a big righty then you will clean the hole. Not one to get wrong as you will have a horrible beating in the back of the fall.
