We paddled the Teign from the confluence of the North and South tribs to Fingle bridge today (14 Feb 09). In the grade 3 section at the top there are 2 trees down that require portages. They are fairly easily spotted and not too stressful to get around/under so shouldn't put people off just be aware that they exist. A few minutes with a bow saw would clear the first but the second would need a lot more work to remove.

For post paddle eats try Whiddons Eatery on the High St in Chagford. Good food at very reasonable prices and paddler friendly, plus they support the Devon Air Ambulance.

Paddled part of this section yesterday. Just below Chagford Bridge there was a string of barbed wire across the river.
I managed to detach one end and coil it all onto the post on the left bank.
Might just be worth keeping an eye out if it continues to appear.

Does anyone know what the EA gauge at Clifford Bridge (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ho ... ionId=3214) would read for this section to become paddle-able? The guide section recommends all the stepping stones at the get in need to be covered, any idea what this would be?

This section is difficult to find, we got on at Chagford Bridge by mistake and was disappointed with grade 1, fortunately we were continuing down next section which was ok. level on Teign guage was 0.84 which wasnt covering stepping stones once we searched for get in at end of day.Easiest way to find the get in is it is just before the entrance to Gidleigh Hotel, parking for 1 vehicle only..Hope this helps.

Which EA guage did you use, Mark? Thinking of paddling this over the Xmas break. It is a great river when the water is over the stepping stones. Always run it when it has been chucking it down for a while.

Parked the van by the footpath at Gidleigh park and walked down to the river then shoulderd the boats for 10 minutes upstream through the field to a gate where the woods start. Upstream the river steepens but unfortunatly is choked by trees. Well worth doing as adds another 1 km of interesting paddling to the trip. 1 large tree which could be sneaked or portaged about halfway down. A nice little paddle if your in the area.

Paddled from the stepping stones down on 6th Dec 15. On shuttle we bumped into an older local lady who was very anti ("I don't care what that guidebook says there isn't any access agreement...') Here main issue was with people getting on South Teign just above confluence, causing erosion to the bank and blocking the road. Once we had convinced her we would be getting on the North at stepping stones within the 'Hotel grounds' she was fine. There was a river wide tree(s) about 200m from stepping stones.
Then bumped into a shouting man downstream - who turned out to be helpfully asking if we needed help (one of the guys had an out of boat experience). He said he managed all the surrounding land and was happy to see us paddling.
Finally bumped into a younger NT guy at Chagford bridge who was very nice but very slightly hinted at no access (in as much as he was very positive about access on A382/Dogmarsh bridge down). It wasn't much more than "yes there is a footpath next to this bridge but there is no legal right to carry a kayak on a footpath".

Only likely portage just before the river flattens out above Chagford Bridge.

Walked along the Teign today. The broken footbridge, 700m downstream from Dogmarsh bridge (A382) is (still) blocked with fallen trees. Best to inspect for portage - probably river left.
