Tree in Nith Gorge

Post by George Mcmillan »

We were on the Nith yesterday. We knew there was a tree problem in the gorge but didn't know where. We opted to get off just after the pop out hole, get changed and go and have a look at the tree problem to make sure we were safe next time we are on the river.
After much scouting about we decided we should try to remove the tree.

Is anyone up for helping? We don't really have that long before higher water levels in the gorge won't allow it.

I'm up for helping.

Probably worth giving the Queensberry Estate Office a call. They will have access to all the kit and expertise required to deal with this (plus it's their land!).

Paddlers who know the Nith well shouldn't have any problems with the tree as it can be easily portaged river left.Anybody with a reasonable break out can eddy out above it. In higher water a line opens up round the back of the rocks thus avoiding the tree altogether. It could be nasty if you were swimming though, after playing on the drop above.
