Northern Norway next summer? Travel tips.

Post by Erling » Wed Oct 25, 2006 8:54 am

The ferry company Helgelandske now offers a Coastal Pass for their boats, which include car ferries as well as high-speed catamarans. Their fleet serves all of the coastline from Brønnøysund north of Trondheim to Skjervøy north of Tromsø – including the beautiful Helgeland coastline and islands and Lofoten. It's simply a paradise for sea kayakers. The Coastal Pass is valid for ten days, and costs 850 NOK per person. Add 100 NOK for bike or kayak. 950 NOK equals roughly 78 UKP.

A temporary brochure in English here (opens as a pdf-file).

An interactive map of all of Norway, use the zoom tools.
Or if you prefer, aerial photos.

Thanks for that Erling. Do you know if it is possible/cost effective to travel from somewhere like Stavanger to Helgeland, Lofoten or even further north by ferry?

Grazie;
The obvious choice would be the Hurtigruten coastliner that operates the distance Bergen - Kirkenes (read: Russian border). Daily departures from Bergen every day of the year at 8 PM. You can disembark at Brønnøysund at 1 AM two days later, after a sightseeing cruise to the bottom of the Geiranger fjord (on UNESCO's world heritage list). As you may know, there's a ferry Newcastle - Bergen (- Stavanger).

Edit: I just discovered that Hurtigruten has a UK site.

When the wife and I kayaked on the Helgeland coast last summer, we drove from Stavanger to Bergen, got the car and kayaks on board Hurtigruten, and disembarked at Trondheim to drive the rest of the way:

You do know that there is no ferry to Norway from anywhere in the UK anymore, I'm not even sure the Harwich to Hook of Holland still runs.
