I see what you mean, but it's probably best not to speculate.

The accidents was a tragedy. The BBC site says two men were arrested. Is there more to this report than the BBC mention? Was there foul play?

"Two local men, aged 42 and 47, have been arrested in connection with the death."

That is strange. Who would want to upset a canoe on the Wye?

Seems a little strange. Was it a hired boat that sank so they are doing the people who hired it out maybe or was there something else the police are not releasing to the public re. the incident.

Is it possible that the equipment was rented? Not wishing to speculate, but that could be a reason for arrests (i.e. hiring out equipment on a day with potentially dangerous conditions, or equipment that was not fit for purpose). I guess we'll have to wait and see.
What's the worst that could happen?

Could be that they hired out the canoe without due regard for the experience of the hirers being in mind the condition of the river..... Was it a large enough canoe for three people?

Worrying.

Other canoe hire companies weren't renting out canoes on that day due to the conditions.

It's always possible that it might not be hire related.

A couple of other scenarios..

- Are motorboats/powerboats allowed on this section (no personal knowledge of it)? Could be an irresponsible boat owner swamping or colliding with the canoe?

- irate fishermen - similiar to the Seoint issue of old??

The two have been released on bail. The incident is still being called an 'accident' on the BBC, who presumably have more facts than they are letting on.

Spot on. It was not one of the long standing, recognised and affiliated hire companies in the area and none of those companies were hireing as it was very windy, cold and the river was high on the day. I would suspect that the people bailed have been arrested on corperate manslaughter but do not know that for sure.

I hear that the three had been turned away from two hire companies who had due regard for the conditions and went to a third. The story ran that they capsized once and then got back in, before capsizing again. Lost contact with the victim and spent 30 minutes searching before going for help.

Billie's father was interviewed on Woman's Hour this morning and spoke very movingly about the circumstances of this tragedy (4.20min)
and the trust he has since set up in her name.
