Spraydeck wear : repair ?

Post by charleston14 »

Anyone have any tips on repairs to my spraydeck? It’s started to wear where my buoyancy aid rubs on it when paddling.

Iron on patch ?

Aquasure or Aquaseal (these are the same product, and may be the same as Sureseal recommended by Owen). Stretch the deck slightly, spread a layer of sealant, leave 24 hours. If you don't stretch it, the patch of sealant stops the deck stretching.

If it's neoprene - Black Witch or something similar available from dive shops for wet-suit repairs.

or

Should do the job.

You mention an iron-on patch. Does that mean you've got a hole in it? If so, you can patch it with some similar material - I did mine with patches above and below the holes and that's been bomb-proof. I just used two-part drysuit repair glue, but the other glues mentioned will work.

If it's just wear (and I'm assuming it's a neoprene deck here) then another good option to make a really smart repair is liquid latex. This stuff has the appearance of light grey milk, so it's easy to paint on over a large area. It will dry to be a smooth, shiny, tough, flexible black rubber coat. (Loads of other colours are available.) You generally need to do 3 or 4 coats. If you mask off the area with tape, you'll end up with a reinforced patch, custom finished to whichever design you want.

Through happy chance I found some wetsuit glue from an old repair to a wetsuit, will try that, I suspect it will gradually abrade and rub off as the neoprene is already a little bit pilled. If that fails I’ll go liquid latex :-)
