Paddling the River Tamar

Post by Jo C20 »

Afternoon all,

I'm looking for some advice regarding kayaking the River Tamar. Where would be the first feasible put in to then kayak to Plymouth Sound? There would be a group of us in maybe 5 or 6 kayaks paddling as much of the Tamar as possible for charity. We've all got experience of kayaking and own our own with an instructor amongst our group.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

The furthest I've gone down the Tamar into Plymouth is from Calstock - a few times. Those have been there-and-back trips with the tide, and were reasonably easy (in a sea kayak). So if you're doing it one-way, going from Calstock would take less than 2 hours and has an excellent put-in with a nearby pub. If you're trying to get as far down the Tamar as you can in a day, then my guess would be to go from Horsebridge as you could comfortably do it within the 6 hour tidal window. I've done the Horsebridge-Gunnislake trip which Adrian Cooper has linked to above which was easy whitewater and nice Cornish countryside. I haven't done the Gunnislake to Calstock section, but some of my paddling buddies have and reckon it's particularly scenic.
