An accident in the Bay of Somme leaves 4 victims, the Canoe Kayak family is mourning

An accident took place yesterday Saturday January 11th, 2020 in Baie de Somme as part of a club outing, in Hauts-de-France. Three people died and a teenager was hospitalized for hypothermia. The navigation project was careful and secure, and the weather conditions were good when they departed.

Here are the facts:
  • Kayakers had an appointment at 2 p.m. in Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme for their weekly outing on Saturday afternoon,
  • Given the tide (mean spring tide, low tide at 7 p.m.) and very good wind conditions (southwest 13 knots), they decided to sail from Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme to the Hourdel ,
  • The wind conditions and the hour (15:32) being favorable to continue the excursion, the person in charge of the group as well as the instructor on shore validated the extension of the excursion until Cayeux-Sur-Mer,
  • Near the Brighton lighthouse, large and very sudden waves split the group into two subgroups of four people each,
  • The first sub-group was able to disembark while the second was lost. Rescue was then triggered with the support of the gendarmerie (a patrol was passing by), then at 5:25 pm with the Regional Operational Center for Surveillance and Rescue (CROSS),
  • The aid was then coordinated by the state services.
The outcome of this accident is dramatic since after having found the adolescent in the group hanging on his kayak, in hypothermia, the three other members of the group, including a woman, aged 48, 55 and 57, were found lifeless during night, out of their boats. They were regular practitioners, two of them holding the Federation green paddle (EPP two stars).

The Canoe Kayak family is in shock and bereaved. Jean ZOUNGRANA, President of the French Federation of Canoe Kayak and Paddle Sports, as well as all the members of the executive committee of the federation offer their sincere condolences to the families, members and leaders of the club.

Very sad, many Portsmouth club members have paddled with this club and CKMer in France. Sandrine has joined us on paddles in the Solent as well. We are thinking of their family and friends.
