Northern Spain

Post by BEEM »

Hi,
I am going to be travelling by ferry to Santander on the northern coast for a couple of weeks over summer (end of july/beginning of august), I am taking a couple of kayaks for some surfing whilst I am out there. But are there any dam release rivers or rivers which may have water in them along that northern strip. Ideally grade 2-3, possibly 3-4.

I have paddled in Sort a few years ago and wont be heading across that far.

Thanks

Trying to remember what I have paddled west of Sort.
Rio Gallego, grade 2 to 3, dam release, did it once.
Rio Ara, have done this several times. Great run. Two sections that can be run as one. 7km grade 4, really good, then 15 km of 2 to 3 with 1 grade 4, equally nice.
Friends have done the section after as well.
Rio Esera is lovely, 20 km of 3 with some harder bits. Every time I have done this I saw Golden Eagles.
White Water Pyrenees is a good book if you can get hold of it.
Hope this helps. Jason

Minho is dam release, on the northern border between Portugal and Galicia. Only been there at Easter so not sure if the releases are big enough for kayaking in the summer though.
