Newbie question about fitting bungee cord to Perception Scooter

Post by orsoch » Tue Nov 05, 2019 3:20 pm

Hi guys,

I've recently bought my first sit on kayak - a Perception Scooter - second hand.

Before I start drilling holes in it I thought I'd check here first. I've bought bungee cord and want to have a criss-cross arrangement on the rear to retain anything I might want to carry. There are no holes to thread through, just a series of flattened tabs (see pic). Do I drill holes or is there some other clip or arrangement I need to use please?

thanks for all assistance.

You’d probably need to find a screw on deck fitting that can be bolted in place for the bungees to thread through. This means you need access to the underside of the plastic to fit the washers and nuts or you could resort to self tapping screws but that’s less robust.

Don't know, those tabs look like they might be made solid so you can just drill through without impacting the watertight integrity. Maybe try asking on Song of the paddle form, there are more SOT kayak paddlers there who might know.

Think I’d drill a very small exploratory hole ..say 1 or 2 mm and have a poke around the inside of the hole to feel if there’s solid sidewalks to that drilled out hole or if there is a gap between the entry and exit points in the outer surface of the kayak. A tiny hole can be filled using the plastic cut from a milk bottle and a soldering iron or hot metal implement to weld in some new plastic to fill the hole.

You can use pad eyes with well nuts. I am unable to attach the link from my phone but there is a YouTube video covering this exact method. Perception has used these for decades in whitewater boats to attach seats and pedestals.
