Replacing ropes with ratchets

Post by banzer » Wed Oct 09, 2019 4:08 pm

Hi all

Does anyone know someone / somewhere (preferably near Yorkshire) that can replace the rope and cleat backband system in my 'Exo Creek' with a ratchet one? I don't fancy doing it myself, unless it really is easy.

I've tried replacing the ropes, but it still just pops out whenever anything remotely 'interesting' happens on WW.

Thanks, Richard.

I can't help with replacing the system, but I have an EXO boat and have solved the problem of the rope popping out (which I had on one side but not the other, implying that one of the ratchets is not working properly--in your case it sounds like it's both ratchets) by putting a knot in the rope. I can still release the rope; it gives about an inch (between the top of the ratchet and its bottom). I am finding that this is enough "give" for me to slide into the boat easily enough.
Alternatively, you could try replacing the ratchets. They should hold a 4mm rope without sliding; the "good" ratchet in my boat does this reliably, even during boofs etc.
Final idea: you could contact the guys at FLOW kayaks, who sell EXO stuff in the UK. They might be able to help.

Thanks for that.

I hadn't actually thought to notice whether it was one side in particular. Will do some dry land testing!

Replacing the cleats with better ones might be feasible - I'm not familiar with Exo, do you have a photo of the existing cleats?

I did Google for photos and found this thread but you'll have seen it already...

You could try replacing the rope with rope a mm or two bigger, this worked for me in a Jackson in the past. Cheap quick and and easy solution that worked.

On my Jackson, once I've pulled the ropes tight, I keep hold of them & then lean back or push the footrest (depending which rope I've tightened) whilst keeping the tension on the rope - this forces it into the cleat more.

I've not had any poppage since doing that....

I reckon a man of your learned status could manage this, Banzer.

I used the ratchet from an old pair of snowboard bindings and some webbing to replace the shit backband in my Wavesport. Much much easierer

I just find with the cleats, that the rope pops out sideways. So tying a knot doesn't make any difference. What I need is a cleat that you really need to press the rope into with a 'pop'. Mine just don't do that.

thanks for the replies.

I've just got the t rex. love the boat but not 100% convinced with the back rest system, why can they just do the ratchet system like most
