Croatia Sea Kayaking

Post by AnnM36 » Wed Aug 21, 2019 5:13 pm

Does anyone have any experience of independent paddling in Croatia?
We are planning to take our sea kayaks on our camper van to Croatia. Can anyone recommend good places/campsites to paddle for day trips or overnighting. We are both 3 star sea kayakers. Also any references to good maps/charts etc would be welcome.

If you are travelling further south towards Split you might want to have a look at Red Adventures. We did a week guided and then the year after a week self guided but with a mobile( Croatian) and daily weather info. Im interested in what you find around Rovinj.

I Have found some tourist office bike maps useful in that they are 1:30000 and have nearby islands etc on them. Weather by using various windy/windguru/YR & accuweather via google. Did find reference to VHF channels for local updates as well.
https://www.seakayak.hr/index.php - has useful info
Some info on our trips so far... Due to our motorhome we are limited to day trips rather than overnight camping trips.
Camp Polari to Rovinj, return via islands including Otocic Sturag - Lots of Islands around Rovinj, just watch out for pleasure boats. Had to use 1:30000 bike map.
Camp Polari to Cisterna Beach, return via island Otocic Vestar to campsite - Short paddle due to thunderstorms. We were contemplating long paddle to Lim Gorge but had to forget that due to weather.
Bi village (nr Fazana) to Brijuni Islands Kotez & St Jerolim, Staying on border of National Park, crossing boat lane 3.5km crossing to Portic - Managed to get a chart from NP office because they were showing forbidden areas. Be aware of exclusion zone around Brijuni Isalnds national park. You are meant to pay 220kn to enter, but NP office wasn't clear how…they only deal with organised groups. Went to Kotez which was deserted & landed no problem, St Jerolim tried to charge use 40kn when we landed at cafe for coffee, but they relented & just told us not to stay long.
Bi village (nr Fazana) to Punta Christo Lighthouse, direct return - short paddle due to morning thunderstorms. Went round to other side of bay to view Pula, not any better landing sites, so returned to beach further away from Stinjan campsite.
Arena Runke Camp to Cliffs & caves of Kamenjak National Park - No charge for National Park. Some of bays with beach bars etc, secluded rocky beaches. Interesting cave to snorkel in & cliff jumps on southern tip of peninsula. Be aware lots of tourist boats & also sit on top kayak groups, so choose landing carefully for composite boats. Ended up snorkelling from kayaks at caves. This area is popular for windsurfing due to the local wind systems, so can make paddling against a bit of a challenge.

Now heading to Cres, Rab & Krk.
