charts, paper or download?

Post by on the rocks » Sun Aug 11, 2019 7:04 pm

I'm thinking of getting the Admiralty leisure chart folio for North Wales, but was wondering if the charts are available to download and print like the excellent download OS maps; I can print and laminate an A4 extract for the coast I intend to travel. I've not been able to find anything on line?

I’ve played this with a few of the chart apps so far (on iPhone and iPad). None of them that I’ve tried have built in printing support. The best you can do with them is take screenshots and print those.

Have you looked at visitmyharbour.com? I’ve grabbed charts off there using screenshots before.

Doesn’t work off a phone but I find it works well off a pc

Charts for the whole UK, £25. Print any area you like.

That's fantastic, I've just bought two out of date folios for more than that.

Thanks, that looks good, although it's £45 for the PC version to print charts (£25 for iPhone only)

Oops, apologies, so it is. I have the PC version which I bought a year ago for £50 and just checked the current advert - didn't spot that the price is version dependent.

All the same, the ability to print and laminate chart sections for a journey is a real fantastic find, thanks Chris.

And the Mac version is bloody awful, especially the printing. Which is why I'd forgotten that one had a printing option ;)

eOceanic, if you google this it will give you details of some anchorage or other and no link to the basic charts. However, scroll down to the chart, make this full screen and you can zoom and navigate your way to any place and scale you like. Various options for screen capture or direct printing. But I usually mark up the OS map with navigation details along with tidal info from the pilot as I invariably want to know where a shop or road might be found. OS maps are available very cheaply in charity shops and I've found cutting these up and laminating them makes a deck friendly chart. A square protractor with a piece of string through the middle, and length of string knotted at 1 NM intervals and you have all you need for complex calculations. An ultra-fine point sharpie is good for marking bearings, weather and tidal gate times on the laminated map. It is amazing how things go out of your mind in a choppy sea.
