Canal tunnrls

Post by davideamesde » Thu Jul 12, 2018 3:03 am

I always thought that kayaking through the tunnels on our canal net work was ok as long as you were lit up and following a barge, I have however just watched a video on YouTube of just such a thing but the kayakers were caught by British Waterwars and told to vacate the tunnel. So I'm just wondering, what are the rules about tunnels? Can anyone enlighten me please?

Some have specific bylaws against taking unpowered boats through.

Ah ok, so I guess getting in touch with British Waterways would be a good Idea before venturing out, thanks Mike

Following a barge through a tunnel is a pretty bad idea! The fumes they kick out are not pleasant and in the confined space of a tunnel could have quite unpleasant consequences.

That's a very good point Not Dave, what happens if half way through the tunnel though you're met by an on coming barge? I'm thinking that it's probably just safer to stay out of the tunnels lol
