Lochaber Restoration

Post by Mark Graham »

BBC Scotland had an episode of the Repair Shop on the Road yesterday evening featuring the restoration of a Lochaber, as per the Canoe Boys. I missed the first part but well worth a watch if you have access to catch-up. I say Restoration - almost a complete rebuild!

Thanks Mark
There is more on this in a couple of threads here.
Note however I initially went on to the normal catch up site and It threw up a Jay Blade repeat issue so I went back to the channels and down to BBC Scotland
Watching now as snow has prevented my usual out door occupation.
The Repair show has gone on tour.
Fascinating are the plans still available?

Cheers Chris - not sure about the plans but by now you will probably have seen that they replaced piece for piece. And kudos to the owner - very best of luck to him in paddling.

Those guys in the school of boat-building did a marvellous job.

https://www.scottishmaritimemuseum.org/ ... ng-school/

Check out the intro photo it looks like some of the students are putting the canvas onto the hull.
The main man did say that they had no plans and I guess they would be informed enough to aquire if they could.
It looks like there's an exhibition to interest Parahandy fans with a puffer though not the Vital Spark which was lying in Inverary

Good evening everyone,

Well, I am the extremely fortunate owner of the Lochaber Boat Canoe.

The Repair Shop has very recently “launched” a new and exciting series, called The Repair Shop on the Road. The first programme which was released on BBC Scotland , last Monday, features the restoration. I was very, very lucky and excited to be part of the programme and will treasure the memories for ever.

I am extremely grateful to everyone involved with the programme and especially Connor, at the Scottish Boat Building School, in Irvine. I visited the School twice last year, for filming and it is a very special place, well worth visiting if anyone is up in the area.

The programme is scheduled to be broadcast on the BBC, in February 2025. In the meantime the programme is available to watch via the iPlayer app. I have pasted a link below (hopefully it works).

Regards

Tucker

Hi Tucker
Brilliant, thanks for letting us know. They did a stunning piece of work. As seen from your initial post in 2/3 of a lochaber style kayak.
I'm going to watch the program again!

BBC Scotland and BBC Alba - so much better than any other channels for outdoor activity programmes.

Thanks Mark
I'll keep an eye out.
Re watched prog, If one wanted to just watch the boat restoration the times are roughly 03.04-10.43, 28.20-31.01, 33.46-35.17, 38.40-43.06 so roughly 17 minutes.
Don't shoot me I enjoyed the whole show and Ailsa Craig gets a visit
