Wimmens winter undersuit

Post by Grian »

There is a 6 week wait for delivery of an Immersion Research undersuit and I'm wondering what else is available that is equally convenient and comfortable that will provide adequate insulation for winter paddling.

Uni-sex rather than ladies cut but very comfortable, speaking as a bloke.

No drop seat though, obviously, so no good for wearing under a drysuit that has one.

If that isn't a problem, another possible option might be Reed Chillcheater possibly?

Their transpire fleece separates are pretty warm btw, albeit not quite as toasty as a big woolly one-piece.

I have a Nookie Iceman undersuit that I’ve been wearing under my drysuit - kept me toastie for a couple of 2hr+ paddles this week where the temperature has barely crept above zero. They don’t make it in a women’s version, but is made from Polartec 100 thermal fleece which provides just the right amount of insulation IMO without getting that boil-in-the-bag feeling - about half the weight of the Lomo suit.

I use the NRS expedition suit. It has the drop seat that lines up with my (Kokatat) drysuit and I especially like the fact that it has very thin fabric on the cuffs to avoid creating bulk around my drysuit wrist gaskets.

Thank you for suggestions :) I can't understand how my increased internal insulation isn't more effective, there definitely isn't as much room in my drysuit as there was a few weeks ago!

If anyone is looking for pogies I can recommend Kosi-pogies, got a pair yesterday and they are so warm and comfortable and very easy to get into with a stiffened cuff.

They arrived amazingly quickly and you can specify colour, add a reflective strip, and Rosie the maker altered these to fit over a Greenland paddle shaft - and they came with a wee packet of Haribo sweeties!

Hi Grian
I have found Peak rashie thermals plus a DLX wicking top seem to keep me a a comfortable temperature under my Typhoon drysuit.
Those Pogies do look interesting can you post a direct link, as there is a mad array of ebay and amazon slots.

If you're looking for a good winter undersuit, the NRS expedition suit sounds like a solid option - especially with that drop seat feature leighv mentioned. Those Kosi-pogies look awesome btw, nice find!

My experience with Brynje is similar. It was recommended to me as good for being warm in cold situations while minimising overheating, and it does seem to work.

Does anyone have experience with Typhoon's lightweight undersuit? Is it as warm as Immersion Research undersuit? Is the fit and finish good?

Hi Grian,

My partner has a Fourth Element 3D Halo undersuit which she wants to sell. It has a rainbow zip drop seat.

Details here:
https://andark.co.uk/product/fourth-ele ... undersuit/

Note the arm pocket zip has corroded and no longer functions. Otherwise no wear or holes, entry zip and rainbow zip all run freely, and the fleece is still fluffy.

Size wise it’s labelled a 14 but my partner normally is a 12, and it fitted her well. Reason for sale she founded it a bit bulky under her drysuit suit.

She brought it second hand and is just looking to recoup her out lay of £120.

If interested let me know, can send photos and if near Aberdeen you’re welcome to try for size.

Hi Ed, thank you for letting me know about this. In the end I decided better the devil I know and am hoping the Immersion Research suit won't take the full 6 weeks to deliver - the weather at weekends will probably be stormy until then anyway!

Have you added this to the classifieds section? I imagine it might sell there.
