River for kayak camping
Re: River for kayak camping
A few years ago I paddled/camped the Warwickshire Avon from Stratford upon Avon to Tewksbury (and back); I highly recommend same.
The wonderful think about most/all navigable rivers of any length is their locks. Wherever there's a lock there's a parallel channel with a weir, creating an island which you can camp on.
Technically, I suppose, one is camping without the permission of the river authority but you'll be camping without someone's permission wherever you wild camp.
I was sure to pitch well out of folk's way and I always did a litter-pick (of other people's rubbish) so no-one could allege we'd left a mess.
I always made camp at dusk and typically left at dawn to minimise exposure. However, I have only ever received respect from other river users for this practice.
We did stay one night at a proprietary riverside campsite, probably because we wanted a shower.

Just be aware that so far as camping is concerned, you may be better on the commercial campsites. There aren't many places where you could wild camp without the risk of an angry landowner.River Wye, anywhere from Hay on Wye down.
