Drain Plug Thread Repair

Post by callwild »

Any ideas how to repair the thread on a drain plug hole.
My plug became hard to tighten and it leaks so think the threads have become cross threaded somehow.
Any ideas how to rebore the trhreads in the hole?

That sounds tricky. Can you drill out or otherwise remove the existing 'hole' and fit a new set, such as this?

Interested in what design of boat this is Stuart? I'm not up to speed with boats these days, but surprised that any have moulded-in / drilled out threads directly in the boats plastic these days.

Think Chris is on the money with his suggestion - buy and fit a stand-alone unit.

Its a Jackson Axis. Think all the jackson boats are like this.
Was hoping someone might have a tip to avouid redrilling and fixing a new unit as Chris has suggested . But that would have its own problems as hole is down in a recess. !

A further thought, Stuart, might be that if you gently warm the damaged thread, the plastic may have a 'memory' and restore its original shape. Stand the end of the boat in a bucket of hot but not boiling water?

How about asking Jackson how they create the bung hole in the first place, and (presuming its not moulded in directly) if the tool they use is something that is commercially available?

This thread feels like it is from 2003 not 2023! Happy days.
