River running in a surf kayak?

Post by ditch09 »

Has anyone tried river running in a surf kayak? What was it like?

I used to surf ski a bit years ago and have recently started getting into whitewater but I miss the ability to carve hard when surfing. Does anyone know what a plastic surf kayak with no fins, something like the mega maverick, would perform like on a river ?

I assume the hard edges would catch if you edge the wrong way, although some playboats do look to have fairly hard edges so this might not be to much of a problem but they all look to short for getting any speed.

And advise would be appreciated trying to figure out what boat to get.

That looks like great fun, I assumed they would surf standing waves well.
I am more curious how a surf boat would deal with all the other river features.
Do the sharp edges mean they are unusable on any part of the river?
Are they bouant enough to run class 4?

Joe is very skilled and you can see him fall over the hard edge a few times.

Slightly modified (rails softened up a bit) Double Dutch Screamers are regulars on Grand Canyon trips.

I have paddled plastic HP boats down grade 2-3 to get to playwaves and to be honest, it sucks! IT is doable but the seating position is wrong, the edges are punishing and boily water is a nightmare.
Carving into an eddy in a finned boat and kicking spray is fun though.

the river screamer is a differnt boat the the ocena ones. and the coean ones are gentle compared to a number of others. I have done the squashtial on a slalomcourse it was a pita. as i have seen other not having the best padlding days on a river in a surfkayak. park and play n a great wave might be a good palindg day. otherwise a seakayak or a racing k1 is about as much fun on the river.
