Hi,

Re: Adjustable Kayak Paddle?

Recommendations for Adjustable Kayak Paddle? That can be adjusted both in length and angle of the blade for use with a Crossover Kayak, mainly for river use, for touring and occasional white water. Are Celtic paddles any good?

Thanks

You make it sound like this is your main paddle.

Reasons for changing shaft length:
* Physical size of paddler.
* Height of seat above the water, width of boat.
Reasons for changing feather:
* Paddler preference.

A longer shaft does give a reduction in cadence which reduce fatigue on a long trip. But this is generally matched with a smaller, longer blade.

I don't know of anyone who changes feather, not sure I know of anyone who changes blade length with the same boat, with the exception of playboaters swapping from a really short zero feather blade used for playing to something more suited to river running.

Generally variable angle variable length splits are carried by group leaders so that the spare paddle can be quickly matched to any member of the group.

To answer your actual question, yeah Lendal's (Celtic's) paddle lock system is really good. Mitchell use a different system, I've not tried that one, but people seem happy with it.

Personally I'd demo the paddle first and foremost, then look at the available adjustment systems.

I saw a young lad at our club last week with an Ainsworth split paddle adjustable for length, [ up to 200cm], and feather. Carbon kevlar, very light and nice looking bit of kit.
Regards.

Personally, I'd buy one that suited my River/touring paddling if that was my main focus & just put up with it for the occasional whitewater....

What boat do you paddle? Either match the paddle to that, or buy one per boat.....
