SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
I have rewritten the SCA Where's the Water website code. It should look just the same as before but with the useful addition that we can now edit the calibrations and add new river gauges.
http://canoescotland.org/where-go/wheres-water
So we now need suggestions for new gauges to add. SEPA has nearly 400 gauges and there's only 60 shown now so there must be many more that are useful. if you're familiar with a river and know what would be good calibrations to use please fill in the River Gauge Request Form. (You can also use that form to suggest a place for SEPA to build new gauges, we'll pass on those requests at the SCA liason meetings. We will ask for the Etive got sure.)
It would be great to get the calibrations better. If you go out for a paddle, note the time and gauge reading and fill in the River Level Report Form form on the WtW page to tell us if it was low or high etc so we know where to set the calibrations. Do fill it in even if the calibrations are correct so we know to keep them the same.
Forms on the WtW page above. SEPA gauges can be found at http://riverlevels.mobi/
I hope to add a simple list view interface for quick browsing and low data usage and at some point I hope to update the map view to work better on phones. Let me know if you find any bugs (jriddell.org/contact) or have code features you want.

Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
I've got a list of Clyde trips, relating level to gauge. It would be a pain filling in the form on the website - how do I get it to you? Email SCA for the attention of your name?

Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
The North Esk is of particular interest right now as we are trying to move the gauge to one near Edzell, rather than one near the sea, which should be more accurate. So, if you are out on the North Esk, please fill in the report for this gauge: http://apps.sepa.org.uk/waterlevels/?sd=t&lc=371579
Thanks :)
Thanks :)

Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
Excellent work .
Sad to say there appears to be quite a few of the dam controlled rivers that dont have SEPA Gauges such as the River Awe and the Tummel above the Linn of Tummel. We asked SEPA about this years ago and they said they couldnt see a need because they were Dam controlled so they know how much is being let out. However as any raft guide working on the Tummel will tell you despite being told that a ceratin amount is being let out , the level is actually quite different week to week.
There are other dam controlled rivers that are only rarely runnable I assume this is when maintenance is being done such as the river that flows from Loch Ericht to Loch Rannoch and the one that comes out of the dam on Loch Loyne . If they had a gauge we would be able to see this and make the most of it.

Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
Minor QOL suggestion - could you and Rob (Rainchasers) get your heads together and agree a colour scheme? Currently both using similar colours, but with the scale the opposite way round, so red in Scotland is Huge and red in England is too low to paddle.
Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
I did speak to Rob of Where's the Water but his site has a few bugs and he's not got back to me about fixing them so I guess he's out of time for coding on it currently.

Logic of the rainchasers colour scheme was:andypagett wrote: ↑Mon Mar 19, 2018 12:56 pmMinor QOL suggestion - could you and Rob (Rainchasers) get your heads together and agree a colour scheme? Empty – Red. i.e. universal colour for no go.
Low – Yellow. Bit meh, but paddleable (also between red and green on the traffic light system)
Med/High – Green i.e. universal colour for go – these are the best conditions!
Huge – Purple (warning, but not a no go)
Too High – Red (again, I think – i.e. no go)

Thinking more about it, this scheme makes the more sense of the two in my opinion.Poke wrote: ↑Fri Mar 23, 2018 1:21 pm

We did speak to the WTW guys back in the day when Rob was setting up Rainchasers, but I think that there wasn't the drive (or capability?) to change WTW back then so it never got done.andypagett wrote: ↑Fri Mar 23, 2018 1:32 pmThinking more about it, this scheme makes the more sense of the two in my opinion.
Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
There's been no WtW maintainer for at least a decade. The original source code has been lost.
Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
Does that mean you'll now align the WTW colours with Rainchasers then?!! ;-)

Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
Given how mad people got about me giving the rapids on the north esk consistent names, I don't want to see how they'll get over a colour change...

The rocks of solitude is the rapid with the sign pointing at it with the words "rocks of solitude" on them!
Re: SCA Where's the Water Now Updatable
haha. Do it, and give them the option of either boycotting the site in protest, or sucking it up :-)Kizzie_St-As wrote: ↑Mon Mar 26, 2018 4:51 pmGiven how mad people got about me giving the rapids on the north esk consistent names, I don't want to see how they'll get over a colour change...
