The Lakes...

Rounding off the weekend plans with an overnight in the Lakes, would be very grateful if anyone can advise where is the most lovely to camp and paddle. Ideal if able to camp right on lakeside in order to have a very early morning paddle without starting the car and waking fellow campers. I think wild camping is out in these parts...

Years ago we camped in Keswick next to Derwent Water. We were right at the edge of the lake. It was a camping and caravanning club site. You might have to pay something extra if you are not a member, I can't really remember.

Hows about paddling out to peel island on coniston, camp on the island and then paddle away the next day?

I had a lovely trip there a while back, launched at 11pm, paddled to the island under full moon lit sky, camped under tarp, and then paddled off for a tour of the lake in daylight.

Mike that's a lovely idea, sounds like you had an idyllic trip. A wee island camp would be just heavenly. Maybe its best not to know but, is it allowed? It'd be inconvenient to be chased off.

I SUP'd on Derwent and seem to think it also had islands, I think it was Derwent...

Never asked but never had any problems.

Added to that I am discreet and a strong believer in minimum impact camping, so don't have fires etc. Normally there out of peak season.

I once spent 3 days camping on one of the islands on derwent water as well. No problems, but again it was out of peak season, discreet and minimum impact.

Use one of the camp sites on the east/south shore of Ullswater, just along the road from Pooley Bridge to Howtown. Have your evening meal in the pub in Pooley Bridge and launch straight from the site into Ullswater.

The island on Derwentwater is St Herbert's. Derwent island has a house on. We paddled there last Sunday and on arriving the NT guy advised us not to block in two cars who'd been on the island over night. Now seeing as they own the island I'm guessing it's accepted as long as users are responsible.
