BCU fees to rise in 2017
BCU fees to rise in 2017
I see our erstwhile governing body is to raise the standard adult fee to £45 which I think I'm right is up from £38? A arise of approx 15% which is 7.5% per year since the last rise.

£42 on the website from today.
I don't recall what it was before but it looks as if it is someway above inflation.

SCA full membership fee is £37 (£35 if paid by direct debit). So not as much but not as a big a gap as initially pointed out.Rae1 wrote:How do the SCA manage with their £27.50 fee?
Do BC have more commitments, or is it just the SCA that run with greater efficiency?

Much of the central funding is drying up in 2017, so BC are looking at all and any income streams. Course providers are in the firing line, along with the membership. Other avenues for money will come from a more appealing insurance offering, more commercial partnerships and the selling of third party services.

The SCA operate with zero budgets so break even every year.Rae1 wrote:How do the SCA manage with their £27.50 fee?

Some of us are concerned about the way this limits potential to invest for the future.

SCA membership also doesn't include the canal licence, since there aren't many (any?) canals in Scotland where it would apply, so they decided it wasn't good value for their members.

Agreed. The only real benefit I see is the canal license and third party insurance, insurance which given the way society is heading, is likely to be more and more necessary*.jamiemagee wrote:Not to happy about the rise. Can't say i feel I get a lot out of my memjership lk
More visible access campaigning would be good, I reaĺly don't care for canoe trails as they should be responsibility of local councils / tourist boards, and strong statements supporting paddlers if subjected to threats of injunction would be appreciated. At very least an acknowlwdgment from BC/CE of the recent issue on Welsh Dee.

I rarely use canals. Still as a club coach I need to stay registered so they've got me over a barrel I guess :(

Buy some outdoor gear from Cotswold and get 10% discount by presenting your BC card. The discount is sometimes higher.
Offset your saving from the cost of joining the BC and it does not seem excessive.

Or go to most other outdoor shops and pay 15% less than Cotswold and save your BC membership to get even more toys from the same shop

Well it depends what you want. Buy from Decathlon instead and get cheap poor quality gear that does not last. The choice is yours.damppaddler wrote:PaddyW wrote:Buy some outdoor gear from Cotswold and get 10% discount by presenting your BC card. The discount is sometimes higher.

Most long term BC members are members because they compete or want to maintain coaching awards. (i.e. they have to be members).
I was trying to be positive! You also get discounts at Tryweryn etc. as well as a mag and insurance at 80p per week.
