Upper clough tree hazard
After recent storms there appears to be a number of trees down, many blocking the entire width of the river.
Born to paddle................forced to work.
Re: Upper clough tree hazard
Did the Upper Clough on Saturday 15th Feb and there is only one tree requireing a portage. That is midway between 2nd & 3rd road bridge. It can be easily seen from the road on the drive up.Mike M wrote:After recent storms there appears to be a number of trees down, many blocking the entire width of the river.
Rest of the river was clear.

I think this is the same tree currently down across the river. We managed to sneak under it on the left & it is clearly visible from upstream as you come to one of the smaller drops.callwild wrote:Did the Upper Clough on Saturday 15th Feb and there is only one tree requireing a portage. What I would say, especially for those who haven't paddled this stretch before, is be wary of trees as branches encroach over the river especially on the middle third of the upper stretch. Given the width of the river and small size of most of the eddies you want to give each other plenty of space to make sure you avoid branches as a couple of us found out today to our detriment! Also beware of the fence in the river c.15 mins downstream of the get-on. It is underneath a small bridge & is described in the North West guidebook. You would not want to end up tangled in it.

There's a small tree right across the river about 500m below the road bridge at Low Scale (about 1km below Garsdale Station), grid reference SD 77576 90774 and can be inspected from the road. When the river is high enough to paddle I suspect the tree will be nicely at throat height!
Thanks to Dave Ryall for this info, he added the following;
might be worth a mention that the Clough is the household water supply for people in the dale (there's no mains water to any of the houses) so please be careful not to contaminate the river. Also, keep a lookout for red squirrels; they're very rare and we like to look after them! Lovely things to watch, but no road sense whatsoever...
