Some post-paddle reports...

Interesting.

For the Irish Sea I'd been watching windfinder for swell and wind forecasts at the Celtic Sea Buoy, Magic Sea Weed for the swell, wind and synoptic chart, the met office for the synoptic chart and as the time got closer the shipping and inshore forecasts. We also had information coming from the Stenaline and the firing range at Aberporth.

A week before and some showed it would be good, others unsure but as we got closer to the date we went they all started to agree with each other. If they didn't we wouldn't have gone. We had looked at other windows of opportunity on two previous occassions before the one we took.

I usually find that a day before and forecasts do generally agree each other. I wonder where they were getting theirs from?

It's good to know that everyone is back safely and it seems that there are some lessons to be learned before the next attempt. My hat goes off to them.

Judging by their website, looks like they're not trying again this summer.

I was in Lerwick last Saturday and met two of the paddlers outside the Co-Op .
They were in great spirits and at that time they were hoping for a weather window to recommence the trip .
I was told that they had had a bit of an adventure and had been forced back to safer waters.
The weekend in Lerwick was horrendous I had arrived on the Ferry on Friday with big swell and huge waves breaking over the ferrys bow and the weekend from that point was pretty awful on the water.
I really couldn't see any scope for paddling, Monday was an improvement but even so I wouldn't go near it.
The guys had said they had spent some time improving their kit etc but I'm sure that they were under some time pressure for work etc.
Great effort and the correct decision under the circumstances .
Better to live and fight another day.

Best of luck to them in the future

That made me laugh.

To stay with the WW2/Shetland Bus theme:
I have total confidence in Patrick's and Olly's skills, preparations and equipment. They will either succeed (most likely) or know when to abort. Nevertheless, it's an "interesting" fact that the last two who tried to cross (also in a double) were lost at sea. Two brave boys from my home town Stavanger set out in late May 1941 to join the allied forces in Scotland or Shetland. They never arrived.

Their latest position at 15:00 places them <17Nm from the Norwegian coast. :)

I think they can smell the beer. Should be on dry land before closing!

Chapeau! Much respect to all concerned. What a fantastic achievement. I suspect they'll sleep well tonight.
