South wales conditions

hey all,

I'm taking a small group of college students up to south wales and as always with these planned trips the weather gods have looked down on us and laughed. can anyone please suggest any rivers grade 2-3 in the south wales area that might be runnable on thrusady and friday that can also acccomdate canoes. we are already quite likely heading for the cardiff centre but would much rather a river.

Usk, Talybont-on-Usk to Llangynidr is your only real option but im not sure if id take an open boat down it at its current level. That said im sure its been done before

Slightly more middish Wales than south (only just over an hour north of Swansea though), the Teifi should be OK for a paddle around the Llandyssul area. Always seems to be a bit of water in it, and some of the fun sections are actually more fun at lower flows as they're narrower and not washed out. Fine for canoes too. Contact the guys at Llandyssul Paddlers (they have a website) if you're thinking of heading up there and they'll be able to tell you if it's paddleable.

Chris, Talybont down on the Usk runs at almost any level and is great in a canoe when low as the river becomes more technical. Do you know how to shorten this run? If you do then running twice in a day is easy. Obviously at lower levels we all need to take care about any environmental impact!

We had a great day on the Usk a month back, in similar levels, all in open canoes. Talybont to Crickhowell - no scrapes, but a fair bit of rock dodging.
The day before we'd had a day on the Tywi (Burial ground to Llandovery), level at 0.43 at Dolau Hiririon, which is showing 0.40 today. Any lower and it might be too much of a scrape.
