Re: River Calder - Martholme Viaduct to Ribchester

Hi folks, Wigan Canoe Group ran this from Martholme Viaduct to Whalley weir on Sun 30th July 17.
There is room for just a couple of cars to be left at Martholme, any more would probably cause
a problem.A flat section down to Cock Bridge ( you can launch from here) with just a few
eddy lines to play on. Good for beginners. From Cock bridge there is more interest, and easy
waves and stoppers to play on.There is one longish grade 2 rapid which could go to 2/3 in high
water and an interesting boulder garden towards the end. At Whalley Weir we egressed on the right
as there was not enough water to shoot the Weir. The level was at 0.61 and we scraped in a few spots
so 0.7 or 0.8 would give a nice level without washing out. We had not done this easy river
for a few years, and we found it very enjoyable.Steve H.
