My Lap Belt^

Post by StoneWeasel » Tue Dec 19, 2006 4:05 pm

I ended up putting together a rather sketchy little guide of how to make a lap belt like mine in response to a question of Surfzone (Boatertalk). As I have it already made I figured I might as well post it here as well.

Looks very similar to the Riot Suicide straps. Suitable name I guess.

However, the Dragorossi Thigh idea is much better, in both safety and function.

Yes but you can't build the DR system into any boat you want for under £20 =P

Denzil..
Slight modification idea, rather than have a long under seat section.. tie off the two straps to your back rest.
Thus when you tighten the system, it secures your back rest better as well..
Works very week in my astro.

Unfortunately then I would need a solid point to fix the buckle to which would mean glassing one into my surfboat and having one fixed in buckle for each boat I use it in.
The idea behind my lap strap was that I would be able to use it in any boat (including demo boats) and that it could be attached quickly.
If however, I was to only use it in one boat I would be very tempted to go with your idea of attaching it to the backrest, that sounds rather nifty.

I tie mine on to the backrest with bits of strap.

Ah ha! Found it, Not 100% sure why it was moved (My lap belt is used in my playboats as well as my surf boat) but I am happy with wherever the moderators think it best.

Hi Denzil, spotted this on paddlesurfersunited first, but then found the thread here too.

Is there any chance of seeing some photos of the actual setup?

Having once been trapped upside down on a ski, with a jammed buckle, I like the idea of having more than one release if needed.

Hey Bertie I am off on holiday tomorrow so I will try and dig out my old digi cam and take a couple of snaps of it for you later on today.
If you make it to the Bigbury comp after Christmas you can have a play with it as well if you like.

Very sorry but I am afraid I did not get a chance to sort photos out today and I am running away on holiday tomorrow. I get back on the 29th and will try and sort some photos out then.

As this thread appears to be in the Almanac thingy I thought I should probably update it with a working link and an update.

Link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1--- ... 1qYMpI/pub

Update: When I wrote this guide I advocated using the kayak seat as an anchor point, if you have a plastic kayak and plastic seat then I think this is still fine but after destroying the glass seat in a surf boat with my lap strap I would recommend glassing in anchor points rather than using the seat if it is a glass boat and / or seat.

Some people seem to be having issues with that link so I have rehosted the guide as images.
