Wilderness Canoeists

Post by philbobaggins »

Hi,

It's a long shot, but I'm looking for people who love wilderness canoeing as much as I do? Obviously we need to get on and not hate each other, but we won't know that till we at least get in touch.

I've got a fair bit of experience ...I've paddled in Africa, Borneo, Europe, Canada, US, UK and have my Advanced Canoe Leader for what it's worth. As much as I enjoy the peace and freedom of paddling solo, as I get older, all my mates are married with kids and have responsibilities. In my fifties I have none. So I'm looking for potential partners in crime who are happy to bugger off for weeks or months in the middle of nowhere.

If your interested, give me a shout

Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,

I'm interested! Only just seen your message though.

I'm a moderate water canoe leader, working on advanced conditions, and have done a variety of adventurous trips in the UK, France, and Scandinavia.

I've a yearning to do the Northern Forest Canoe Trail in New England - possibly June 2025, but I think it's too big to take on solo.

Cheers

Hi Murray and Co., we did the NFCT as so-called through-paddlers in 2014 and thought it was a great trip. It changed our view of long distance paddling from just a trip into one of a real journey. My wife published a blow-by-blow account on our website - see www.paddler.nl under "Trip Peports". It was tough but do-able (when we were in our 60's). You have a couple of long portages, so as a solo the question is whether you can carry eveything in one lift or have to shuttle to and fro. Key is a rugged and reliable canoe-cart!

Hi Ancient Mariner,

I think I bumped into you and your wife at the Drôme festival a couple of years back, and I have already found inspiration on your website. I'm perfectly happy with my ability to do the NFCT, I just need to find the right person or team to do it with, as I don't want to solo it. I find that paddlers change their minds once they sober up!

I'm just back from a week on the Ivalojoki in north Finland, which was great, but as you allude to, more of a trip/holiday than a 'real' or life-changing journey. Even over a week, you need to find compatible trip-mates, so it would be super important on the NFCT - all that portage and upstream!

Cheers
