Silva lp70 or 70p deck compass replacement

Post by Sheepskin » Sat Sep 02, 2017 6:30 pm

Mines knackered, lettered fell of plus jamming. I is definitely a silva but can't see model, think it's a Silva 70p.
So best replacement compass?

Are you asking because you can't find a new Silva?

If so, look for a Garmin. Garmin bought the Silva company, and in some markets the compasses are now sold under the Garmin name.

A quick Google brings up a load of hits in the UK so not sure what the issue is.
Here's just one - http://www.northeastkayaks.co.uk/p-h-si ... gL1MPD_BwE

I read the OP as asking for suggestions on possible non-Silva/Garmin compasses to replace current knackered one?

If you Google "kayak compass", and then click on "images" (2nd line down) you will get photos of several suitable replacements from, for example, Ritchie and Autotonic:

Perhaps I am being dense, but which of those compasses would you consider a replacement for a Silva/Garmin 70p?

I did not see any in the picture search. I tried a specifik search for Ritchie and did not find any either. Their V537 model comes close, but it is much bulkier below the mounting plate and will not fit into the void where you would mount a 70p.

If the kayak has one of the common square recesses specifically designed for the Silva 70P then any alternative is likely to be a compromise, and less than ideal. However, to replace the expensive Silva I've used the Ritchie Sport x10 on my Nordkapp HM, a strap-on like the Ritchie Sportabout on my Current Designs double sea kayak, and I've used a Garmin Silva 70UN on a Capella Mk1 because I had one that I had previously used as a hand-bearing compass on my yacht.
None of these is as satisfactory as the compass for which the deck was designed, but I've found them to be suitable and economical alternatives. Removal of a Silva 70P usually reveals just four small screw holes to be filled, rather than a large void, so any replacement does not necessarily need to accurately fit the shallow square recess.
Nick.
