Recommendations on a summer cap for sea kayaking?

Post by thekracken » Fri Jun 02, 2017 6:10 pm

Having lost a couple of thermal buffs after rolling/capsizing, I'd resorted to a neoprene beanie as I have read about surfers ear, though I find it difficult to hear through the neoprene at times...obviously got the surfers ear already! Like the idea of a mini version of a legionnaire's cap though don't think the Scottish summer necessitates the long trailing material at the neck. I'm really after a normal baseball cap with an adjustable chin strap. Is there such a beast? I feel crazy resorting to my helmet, but I find this the best so far. Ideas anyone?

Hi, there are baseball caps with a retainer clip such as the attached link, vary in price and colour

Hope this helps

I used a couple of crocodile clips and a length of paracord to make a retaining strap. Clips on either my winter or summer cap

Check out the on-line chandlers for "cap keepers" - but basically just a couple of croc clips and a length of cord...

Thank you so much to everyone for the ideas, but won't the salt rust the crocodile clips after one season, as I kayak most days?

Then it might be worth the extra spend on http://www.duncanyacht.co.uk/078796-Cap-Retainer

I've got a Musto cap which has a sewn on retainer line and clip. I've had it since 2014 and no sign of rust on the clip. Have a look here:

I keep a fisherman's swivel https://goo.gl/6qXG5w attached to my hat.

Works for me.

Decathlon sell a baseball cap with chinstrap aimed at surfers. It's a good price too.

Thank you so much to everyone. Charleston14, 'decathlon' have a surf cap which appealed to me. For anyone else that needs a peek:

Ian, I have been tempted by musto, but the one above looks the business. Will let you know, and Jonathan, that looks great too.

Just to let you know that the surf cap is brilliant, quick drying and lightweight.
