Which PLB?

Post by Jonathan. » Thu Feb 16, 2017 9:51 am

I've had it in mind to buy a PLB for some time but reading this http://bit.ly/2lQnGH6 - a report of a tragedy that could have easily been avoided - has made me think it's not a purchase I should put off.

And if I can really buy a good PLB for less than £200, then it has to be a bargain.

But what to choose? Recommendations welcome, please.

By the way, I'd prefer not to buy a souped up VHF; I'm happy sticking with my old one.

I have MacMurdo Fast Find .Cost 280 £ ,considering battery life weekly cost is less than 90 pence weekly.
Is always with me in pocket my PFD, and don't affect my judgement.
Is good to have PLB but there is no guarantee..

I have the ocean signal rescue me - £180 for lots of years use.

That said, there are severe limitations with them, ie you have to be conscious or have a conscious paddle buddy to activate them. As such, they are just another tool to have at hand.

Must admit that it doesnt accompany on every trip, partly due to the fact that I prefer two way comms if possible / reliance on group etc. As always, assess the risk and decide.

I have the ACR so there's 3 to choose from!

5 year battery life and if you're unfortunate enough to use it they'll give you a free replacement
