Anyone else ever had this? White fluff in cag.

Post by Chris.d.w » Tue Mar 25, 2014 10:31 pm

Just pulled my cag out of the cupboard, and as I pulled it out loads of what I thought was feathers started falling out from between the outer layer and the deck tube.

Turns out its a very fine white fluff that disintegrates when you touch it. I always dry it before putting it away. Was it mould? Spider nests? Last time I used it was in the sea, so was it some weird salt deposit?

Just curious if anyone has ever had similar?

PU coating de-laminating possibly? If, of course, the tube is coated with PU.

Most definitely salt crystals if not used it for a long time. Did they virtually disappear to the touch?

Serious equipment husbandry item this. As kit gets more sophisticated our personal inventories get longer - safe storage is a real issue.
Could it just be ordinary domestic dust? I find hankie fluff most persistent - I have it all over a black merino thermal and it just won't go - even with one of those fancy clothes brushes. My best solution is careful and patient lifting with a weakly adhesive tape (!!Not a powerful tape like Gorilla!!) :(
Leaking polyester wadding is also hard to get rid of. The PU delamination is an interesting notion, I though it came away in small flakes rather than dust. I just got a "wet-bag" out of storage - brand new and still in it's wrapper since purchase in the mid 80s, rubberised fabric by "SplashSports" - slight discolouration but no sign of breakdown I can detect. Was still wet proof. Not bad for 35 or so years.
I think salt is most likely culprit as it can lurk in folds and crevices which the rinsing didn't reach. How did the taste test go ??
