Fastfind 220 versus Kannad Solo^

Post by Chris329a » Wed Oct 10, 2012 12:43 am

I'm looking to buy a PLB in the near future - I'm happy that the Fastfind is a respected brand and very popular, but wondered if anyone had any experience with the Kannad which seems slightly cheaper? Any opinions?

Just seen that they are the same company - so why the is the Kannad £20 cheaper and includes a lanyard and pouch aswell as the floating pouch and 6 year battery aswell? Looks like it's a better deal unless someone can tell me otherwise?

Just answered my own question for anyone interested....here's what the manufacturer said to me -

HI Chris,

Thanks for your email. They are effectively the same product but branded differently (Fast Find targeting the ‘Outdoor’ market, Kannad Marine targeting the marine leisure market). The only difference really is the rubberised coating on the solo – adds a bit of grip and slightly increases the impact resistance.

I know what I'll be getting.....and hopefully I've saved others a few quid too.....

And just to finish my post off (it's great having your own section!) I just bought it for £180, and the battery runs out 07/2019........ great value for money at around £26 a year for added piece of mind.......

Thanks for that Chris, useful to know (Mike B - add to Almanac?)

Slightly amused by the interchangeable use of PLB and EPIRB......

Not that I don't 100% believe you Chris but my partner, who runs a watersports store, is making a couple of enquiries too, it will be interesting if the manufacturers tell the same story to someone in the trade... especially since they were so keen to push the Fastfind 220 onto us at the recent Paddlefest in Nuremberg, Germany.

Not sure why they would push the more expensive model when as per my e-mail reply they are more suited for the Marine industry. It obviously comes with the extra case and lanyard now so very roughly £35 cheaper than if you bought the "equivalent" Fastfind and accessories? The rubber grip seems very effective too, although saying that mine will be kept in the neoprene case anyway.

I'd be interested to hear what they tell you as on paper and appearance they are identical bar a few design changes......

I'm not sure about re-programming (seems to only cost £20 anyway) but in your case you register it with the Maritime Radio Affairs Unit. They provide this for you in the bumf.

Oh and before anyone says anything, I have nothing to do with any of the companies, just hope that I can encourage people to consider getting one or similar seeing as I see how much people spend on equipment, this is nothing really but potentially will save your life.

Answers :-)

Yes basically the same product as Chris has found out..

They should both be the same RRP according to the manufacturer

Marine Superstore has being buying up bankrupt stock from a trade supplier who recently went pop (not the manufacturer just a middle man) and is passing the savings on to you the end user.

So yes a bargain and once they have gone they have gone..at that price anyway :-)

A good find Chris

I'm about to invest in a plb and vhf. The Kannad SafeLink SOLO is still available for £20 less than the Fastfind 220 so is there any reasons not to go with the Kannad that anyone has become aware of since the last posts on this thread?
Thanks.

Pick and choose certainly, but you won't know which is best until you hear the helicopter....or not

Thanks for the suggestion. Found this little video which was helpful (for me).

Is the battery life on these devices based on when you purchase or a specified date that is on the battery/device?

It is the expiry date shown on the device, at least on my fastfind 220, so it is advisable asking the dealer to avoid any surprises and buy a device thats fallen behind the shelf. Batteries in these devices are to be changed by manufacturer or certified dealer.

Yes its the date printed on the device.

But dont worry about ever replacing the battery in these, imagine where we will be in 2022!

I look at it as insurance. so divide total by 7 and its good value.

The Kannad was £30 more expensive when I bought my Fastfind a couple of years ago. Just shows where the spending power is concentrated these days -used to be in yachting but obviously not any more.
