Michael, who has been kayaking since he was 16, reached the stricken boy who was under water. He had to tip his kayak upside down to grab the lad’s arms and throw him back to the surface.

He then rolled the boat back upright and told the youngster to hold on to the back while he paddled him back to shore.

Michael also managed to help another lad out of the rip. When they were close enough to the beach, other club members waded in and helped to bring them back.

In the meantime, Kevin tried to rescue a fourth boy.

His kayak also flipped over in the water but the frightened youngster climbed on top of it in panic, preventing Kevin from coming back up.

The boat was submerged and the lad tried to use it as a floating device.

"Amazing" is overused, but this is one case where it appears to truly fit. A superb display of presence of mind, courage, and skill. Very well done to both!

Great work Micheal,

such a selfless act typical of the guy.

Stoked that you pulled this off before any of the emergency services arrived on scene.

Sorry to hear you wrote your boat off.

I love a good news story. Great Work, but there are some interesting and important lessons about retaining control when dealing with panicing swimmers. Glad that everyone got to go home at the end of the day, that's a great result.

Good job those chaps, sounds like a very nasty situation.

I do hope the families of the rescued boys volunteer to pay for it, it seems a small price to pay for having your children rescued but someone who sounds like they risked a whole lot more than just there boat to rescue them.

Or failing that maybe a manufacturer/supplier might step up. The publicity they would get should make it worth their while.
