Standard Horizon hand held vhf - not picking up signals

MARINE RADIO - I know we have a couple, but maybe many Marine radio users here.

I'm inland, Ontario, Canada

I have a STANDARD HORIZON portable vhf.
bought 2012 = 7 yrs old
I am usually able to receive weather here, a grand distance from most marine bases.
I have NOT tried recently near marine traffic areas
The global pandemic MAY factor here (personnelle)

Model HX 290
Battery full charge
Squelch off,
can hear white noise
Scan of weather and all other bands does not indicate channel usage. Nor white noise.

Any suspicions / advice I might do here? Most outlets are closed due to pandemic.

If you've got a couple of radio sets, just give yourself a radio check.

You could try these three things.

Adjust squelch, this will create more static noise but may bring out distant broadcasts. It does require careful listening through the static.

Check and clean antenna connection.

Try listening later at night. When I used to work aboard ship, long range communications were routinely much better late at night.

Good luck

Get some height - top of a hill - whatever... to get the arial clear of any obstructions and increase range by "seeing" over the horizon. (Didn't you learn anything from "Stanger Things")
Any paddling mates local to you with a VHF? Ask them to do a radio check on an unused channel

LOL best comment this year so far. We need some levity in these dark times.

Are you looking for your marine weather info on WX channels? NOAA provides a good map of NWR transmitter locations but only for US not Canada. Maybe some time spent chasing up the providers could identify your nearest radiator and status info.

Canada has a Weatheradio network which broadcasts on the same frequencies as U.S. Weather Radio stations do.
Environment Canada shows no service outages.

Silly question. you say the set hasn't been used for a while - Have settings inadvertently been changed... Does the unit need to be set to 'Canadian' for WX to work??

Heres a list of frequencies taken from their website...

WX1 - 162.550 MHz

WX2 - 162.400 MHz

WX3 - 162.475 MHz

WX4 - 162.425 MHz

WX5 - 162.450 MHz

WX6 - 162.500 MHz

WX7 - 162.525 MHz

Ill see if i can get a link to the US WX transmitter map and post it separately.
Good luck!

Hi adventureagent,

I'm not sure if this helps you, but I'm located in Toronto and am currently receiving weather reports on my VHF.

Best,
Julian
