It's been some time since I've contributed to the UKRGB forum and sadly it's now to pass on some sad news.
Olaf Liunberg passed away on Friday, aged 80 years. He had been suffering from cancer.
Olaf and I started paddling together at the Central London YMCA in 1987. The pool based club dabbled in slalom & marathon, but early on Olaf discovered his true love-paddling on the sea.
You may have crossed paths if you paddled out of Twr-Y-Felin in St. Davids (with Andy Middleton) or attended the Anglesey Sea Symposia.
He would regularly paddle 5-star training weekends.
If you recognise people by their boats, He progressed through Ice Floe, a red Shoreline, Black (with red trim) Romany Explorer LV, glittery Rockpool Isel.
More recently in his retirement he frequently worked with Harry Whelan running trips on the Thames out of Cremorne Road.
Olaf continued to coach at the YMCA until the canoe club's closure two years ago.

Sad news indeed. A real gentleman, it was always a privilege to paddle with him at the Anglesey Symposiums - I'll always remember his sparkling wit, inquisitiveness and warmth of character. Thanks for posting this Jon.

Hello all, I’ve registered with the forum just to post here. I knew Olaf since I was a child, as he was a close friend of my dad, John O’Connell. Both were typographers working in the advertising industry during a time that is widely regarded as being the businesses golden era. They were both considered to be the best and when they first started working together regarded each other as being the better - there was nothing in it.

I found this post as I was trying to find contact details for Olaf, as I needed to let him know that dad died on the 22nd Nov. Dad also had cancer. So right up to the end, there appears to have been very little between them.

I only have fond memories of Olaf, the last time I saw him was when I was getting into the creative field myself - he was giving me projects and pouring me glasses of wine. Too long ago.

If his family sees this post, I extend my mums, sisters and of course my own deepest sympathies to them.
