South Devon Trip Advice

Post by WolfofWestwardHo »

Currently planning a multiple day trip along the south coast of Devon. Im looking for some advice from anyone who have done this before. What is the access like at Mount Battern.Where are there good wildcamping spots /camping sites along the coast.

Thanks in advance.

Access at the Mount Batten watersports centre is via a big but occasionally very busy slipway, but you have to pay a parking fee to get to it. The nearest free alternative is the beach at Batten Bay, but that's a bit of a hike to the water, including a flight of steps, and it can be difficult to find a parking space on the road when the beach is busy. You might want to instead try the public slipways at either The Quay, Oreston or Richmond Walk, Stonehouse.

Can't help with wild camping spots, other than that you should be okay on any beach that's high enough providing you are discrete and don't set up camp until the evening.

Hi Jack

I wouldn't leave a vehicle overnight at Richmond Walk. Try Blagdons boatyard at this time of year (adjacent) which would be more secure but no idea about charges.

The advantage of Mountbatten is it's more secure for overnight parking and I believe you may have access to the showers and other facilities included. There are two slipways, a dedicated kayak-friendly pontoon and a half tide beach. Taps to fill up with water and rinse kit so it's well sorted. Phone first to check the centre isn't hosting a sailing championship when it's closed to other clients.

Cheers, Rick
