does anyone know if you have to have a HIN number on a fishing or leisure kayak?

Unless anyone else knows better...

The Hull Identification Number, HIN, is now the Watercraft Identification Numbe, WIN (see here).

The HIN/WIN is required by the Recreational Craft Directive, RCD, which does not apply to canoes and kayaks designed to be propelled solely by human power (see here, second exemption)

so, you don't need one.

Interesting,: many thanks Chris and Aled. Just out of curiosity I wonder if the US (Dept. of Homeland Security, My! How their net has spread!) rules apply to canoes and kayaks built using traditional methods by first nation craftsmen.?? I couldn't see any exemption. Surely there must be some leeway.
