Muckle Flugga

Post by Cain79 » Wed Jun 29, 2016 3:37 pm

Hi

I am having some difficulty getting tidal flow information for muckle flugga, I have checked admiralty totaltides but the information is patchy in that part of the world and doesn't give flow rates between muckle and the unst mainland or between muckle and out stack

I have heard rumours that tides can run at up to 7knts on springs and that the slack period is quite long but timings of these slacks and rates on neap tides are eluding me

has anyone on here paddled this area or could you point me in the direction of where I can get this information?

Many Thanks

Adam

Info in Tom Smith's book is as follows for area between Muckle Flugga and Hermaness:
5kn springs
E-going stream starts -0300 HW Lerwick
W-going stream starts +0200 HW Lerwick

I would assume flow between Muckle Flugga and Out Stack to be similar, but you could ask the boat guys if they are around.

Muckle Flugga? Seriously, you're just hoping us non-Brits will think that a real place right? Like that Rum & Muck island, as if....

Just to verify the information on rocksandroots - the Pesda Press guidebook gives flows between Muckle Flugga and Herma Ness as 5kn springs, ENE starting at -0300 HW Lerwick, WSW starting +0200. According to Gordon Buchanan's pilot, E-going starts -0350 Lerwick, W-going at +0140. He notes that the flow can reach 6-7 kt and that the changes in direction produce powerful eddies. I assumed when marking up the rocksandroots map that this referred to the area N of Out Stack, as this pilot refers to the passage south of Out Stack as a useful shortcut (for yachts!).

Hope that helps. I didn't get that far north when I was out there last summer, but the paddling we did do was spectacular. I need to go back there....

The admiralty tidal atlas NP209 makes it all clear. Popping out and back from Burrafirth is very straight forward as you are only exposed to the tide for a mile or so. Having said that we were in a tunnel near the Noup and the water started moving very fast very suddenly. If you are going round to Haroldswick or even more so along the exposed west coast to or from Bluemell sound you need to study it carefully, sleep on it and study it again... but it is worthwhile, fantastic stretches of coast.
