South West Sea Kayaking Meet 2014?

Post by Mark R »

I want to do some charitable fundraising, so am belatedly considering running another SWSKM in Purbeck. Probably/hopefully involve a nice camping field, some evening talks (with the possibility of a barrel or suchlike donated by a local brewery) and maybe even some live music. It would be run in my usual laissez faire/ ad hoc style, but would hopefully be good fun.

Is there enough interest, given that there is something similar being run in Devon in mid-July? When might be a good time for it?

Cheers,

I'd be interested. Don't really have any preference when. I guess either August or early September.

I could be interested, it would give me an excuse to do a bit of a tour of the south catching up with friends and family.

It would be really nice if I could get my other car back together before then, but that is going to be quite a challenge!
So far I have something on in May but nothing else other than the Oban race (no date yet).

Very, very much so. Sufficient core types now familiar enough with area and leading (due in no small part to your SWSKMs) to both assist and snare in plenty of debutantes. More than happy to assist in Man with Van role for carting beer barrel/dirty great barbie etc.
Any time from beginning of June to end of Sept could be made to work for me except last week of June, though I assume you may be thinking specifically of School Holidays?

Excellent idea! Suggest some weeks away from SDSKM - perhaps late August or early September?

Late August or early September would be a good call for us too.

I'd be very interested. Doing the South Devon meet too but looking for more opportunities to get out.

I could probably manage September. June is Canada, July is the sdskm and August is far to busy with tourists.

Would be very good and to raise money for a worthy cause always brings the best out of people. Early September is a nice time of year.

Another vote for September onwards from me. Too busy mountain guiding over the summer.

I've asked fellow Belgian paddlers if they want to join too. So far (after 5 minutes) I'm still alone though :-)

One or two folk have (quite reasonably) asked me why I haven't acknowledged their signing up for this weekend, yet.

The answer is that I am lazy and feckless, and keep going paddling when I should be working on organising. Sorry, but rest assured, it is going ahead! I'm *ahem* off on another paddling trip now, and when I return in a fortnight, I will contact all who have already signed up.

You wouldn't get this lackadaisical organisation from a proper 'symposium'...

There is incidentally plenty of space left, more paddlers welcome!

Cheers,

Hi all. I've finally begun to get this organised. Everyone who has signed up already should have just received an email from me...please let me know if not.

Plenty of space still for those who want to come and be sociable that weekend...all welcome!

I would love to, but trying to keep a lid on my finances just now so it isn't really possible.
I used about £180 in diesel for the round trip to my Grandad's funeral - I know my total trip was a bit further than just coming to the meet would be even though you did the driving for the paddles we got in that weekend, but it's going to be in the same ball park and I'm already committed to WWPF the following weekend, although I won't be going buggy racing the week after that for the same reason...

Enjoy it everyone - great area to explore by sea kayak - and if you've been before, you just might find some bits have changed.

Mark,
I seem to have paid but received no email; please advise if anything's gone cock-eyed my end.

Same here...
We're gradually moving into the organisation phase of our trip over here, so please let me know if anything (money/info) went missing.

Thanks,
Maarten
