Tory Island^

Post by Chris McDaid » Tue Jun 04, 2013 10:36 pm

Spent the weekend paddling out to, and exploring Tory Island, Co Donegal. Yet another superb sea kayaking destination on Irelands western seaboard

As usual, apologies for the music :-)

Thanx. Its a navigation light, wasn't sure how deep and dark the caves would be

Excellent!
I did some work in northern Donegal a few years ago, looked like a fantastic place to explore by kayak.

Graeme,

Its between 150m & 200m deep. We were very lucky with the conditions, access to that cave and landing on Eagle Island is a rare occurrence

Unfortunately we didn't bring yaks with us and have spent the last few days wishing we had.

Still, the wind has now returned but from the east so no surf.

We've been windsurfing in the sun, swimming in the warm sea and SUPing round Marble Head. The weather has been great.
Next time we'll bring the whole fleet- if the van will take it.

Great video and beautiful coastline Chris.

We paddled Achill Sound, Achill Beag, Clew Bay a couple of years ago - makes me want to go back and explore more of the area!

Without a doubt, the Mayo coastline is world class and it never fails to amaze me that I see so few sea kayakers around this part of the world

Just got lucky. Fortunate that unless its really bad, there's always something to do. The North Mayo coast is more sheltered than most people think, given the prevailing winds. Fierce downdraughts from those huge cliffs tho

Mike,

Loads of options are surely better. Would highly recommend the North Mayo coast and Donegal, both world class :-)
