Fitting fing to a plyboat?

Post by guy »

Hi guys, I have a new Chinese copy of an old river runner/play boat that I use for surfing down here in NZ

There is a complete lack of surf kayaks down here (at least a sensible prices)

has anyone got any suggestions for fitting surf fins to a plastic kayak?

fin boxes/tracks or the fcs system or some otherway?

cut in or glued on? has anyone tried to use the fins that come with foam surfboards

thanks Guy

No it is a cheap old school playboat/river runner

It looks a bit like a perception boat to me but is made in China

If I can find some polythene fin boxes I'll be able to get them welded in - but I would like to know if there are other options

Just get a proper "Mega" surf kayak from www.surfkayaks.com.au.

Ross can ship to you no problem.

To be honest dude I have never seen it done well and have seen several boats ruined by people attempting to do this.

If you are going to do it though I would probably use fairly big wakeboard fins with a screw plate on the inside of your hull to spread the load. I think this would probably be the least destructive method as it would only require four small screw holes through the hull, just be sure to spread the load on the inside of the hull to stop the bolts pulling through.
