I've just watched the DVD. It's really good- well produced, to the point and useful. It's going to be compulsory viewing from my kids, and there's lots of stuff which will be good for coaching too.

New White Water Safety DVD - tasters

Postby Bruce Jolliffe » Thu Nov 15, 2012 9:49 pm

I'm going to share little tasters of the content and style of our DVD with you over the next couple of weeks.

Firstly, this an excerpt from the piece on Communication that's in Chapter 3, What Makes a Safer Paddler?

Today's little taster that I've just put up on our Facebook page is from Chapter 1 - Getting Ready.

Its the intro to our segment on boat outfitting to give you a flavour of how the production flows from one informative piece to another.

Enjoy,

Bruce

Looks good, and good plan to get video professionals to make it. Looks very well produced.

I caught some of it at the Tyne Tour, I was attracted to DMs tent by the sound of your voice only to find you not present in person :-)

Looked pretty informative, but also quite long - I saw a couple of chapters on throwlines and rescues before moving on. I just hope the yoof of today with their 5 second attention span will be able to watch it....

I hear what your saying Jim, but it was hard enough getting the content from a course most of us probably struggle to get through in two days…..into 95 minutes. But I have every confidence in the 'Yoof', brown claws and all.

Anyway, heres the intro from Chapter 4, 'Group Boating Strategies'. Forgive me for not giving too much away, but this chapter is the one where I was really glad we used real boaters for filming, you see the true value of using strategies and not some representation.

I'll cut a whole strategy out for viewing at some point in the near future, for now the intro will do.

When we filmed the DVD we used Steve MacDonald and Richard (Biscuit) Turner from Beyond Adventure to help us out with getting the Canoe White Water Safety & Rescue stuff absolutely spot on.

Here's a montage / sequence showing the outfitting and practical application of a swim line on a canoe.

21 days till christmas lovely people.

Looks like that excerpt was at Grandtully ?

Interesting way to rig a swim line. Not clear from the excerpt but he grabbed the free end of the throwbag and it looked 'krab clipped' on to the drilled rope loop on the end of the boat ? Which is different to the way it was shown in the first segment.

Anyway, looks like a good DVD to buy.

White Water Safety DVD - Canoe Continuity

Good spot, the canoe parts were filmed in Scotland, at Grandtully.

It was a karabiner clipped onto a line that ran from the rope loop to the seat. It had just flipped during the capsize and was hanging near to the rope loop (look at 1.14 and pause it, you'll see the line).

Scots_Charles_River wrote:Which is different to the way it was shown in the first segment.

Steve fitted a 25m bag to a red canoe for a solo paddler, by running a line through the grab loop on the bag. The one in the swim line demo was a 20m bag I clipped direct to the line that I'd already attached to the green two person canoe.

There is another demo of a solo paddler, but its not in that montage I made for that wee excerpt.

Our overriding aim in making the film was to try and give tools, rather than rules. In both examples the concept is the same, the bags (swim lines) are attached to the boat on a line near the gunnel that is on a quick release hitch.

I made the montage from two different chapters. The outfitting was from chapter 1, "Getting Ready" the demo was from chapter 6, "Safe Swimming & Self Rescue"

I hope that helps.

Ta, looks like a good DVD. You should make a WW Open and Open Skills DVD as there has be none really since the wee bit with Dave R across Rannoch moor.

It would appear that we made it onto "The Nice List".

I hope Santa feels the same as Unsponsored.co.uk.

I got my copy the other day and while Ive only been able to watch some sections in detail while skimming over the rest, so far, I have been very impressed with the overall quality, content and presentation of the product. As you said earlier to put into 95 mins what is normally a tightly packed two day WWSR course is very impressive; to do so in such an informative, interesting and lucid way, is fantastic! I look forward to being able to sit down and watch it properly over the hols.

Merry Xmas
Glenn
