Tees!
After a long time of not doing anything challenging, it was a huge relief to find out that I could still paddle :-)
Cheers Rick!

Since I only started this year I've got a lot, but think my favourite has to be the Orchy. Was my first real taste of G3/4 water and made even better by not swimming. A big accomplishment for me seeing as 7 months previous I was swimming multiple times on G1/2. It's been a gear year for for me in relation to progression and getting a love for the sport.

hoofing day on the surf at woolie (hope it's allowed as this isn't a river and should probably be in the salty bit). Waves were only around 3' but they were staying beautifully shaped, the company was great and Fudge's pasties were particularly awesome that day.
Old School?? I miss my AQII..

West Dart 3 days ago, level was 1.9 (2nd Step) Only 2nd time of running it.
Reason: Surviving treefest, brilliant rapids and getting stuck in my 1st ever huge hole (seemed like it at time) and getting out of it safely, wasnt buzzing at time but buzzing now! Cant wait for the video!
Happy Xmas.

Best paddle of the year was... something in Indonesia...

I've been there twice this year. First trip was my honeymoon - and that's a contender because going boating whilst on honeymoon is awesome (yes, my lovely wife not only let me go boating whilst on honeymoon (twice), but joined me too)...

Second trip I got back from yesterday - a 3 week expedition exploring some of the rivers of South Sulawesi. I did my first (successful) multiday first descent (actually two of them), my first solo first descent (once Chris had gone home), had all sorts of adventures, ate some superb food and just generally had an awesome time. No paddling pics online yet, but here are some I took on my phone:

Unique architecture:

Unique transport - the road got so much worse after this point:

Merry xmas all :-)

East lyn , 2 of us , late summer morning , mists rising into dappled sunlight wafting through the trees , nailing all the drops at a great level . Ecstasy .

Top 4 for me...

#1) Back in March, a surf session at Saunton, in 12' swell, sitting on top of the wave looking down the wall of water gave me a total hard-on. Loved it.

#2) Paddling round the Isle of Wight in 2 days. A big tick on my personal objectives list.

#3) Paddling from Shadwell to Gravesend with Michal and Natalie on the first day of their UK circumnavigation. Just being with them on the start of their epic adventure was great, and seeing the scale of the QE2 bridge from underneath was staggering.

#4) Exploring Ramsey Island and The Bitches at the WWSKM. Superb scenery and fun conditions.

Dipper Creek, BC. It was the most committing and steep gorge I've been in with classic waterfalls, sweet lines and was a great way to wrap up the season! Cant really do it justice in a video but this was my attempt!

Best paddle for me this year would be the upper medelsbach is the Rhine valley. Blue skies, clean drops & crystal clear water. Absolute heaven. The rest of the rivers out there were also very special.

Also the last time I paddled this year. Back in April I went out to Morocco with 4 friends and my girlfriend and did my first multi day trip. I also got engaged in the middle of atlas mountains after an "interesting" day on the water. You know it was interesting when it starts off with a goats head at breakfast has some epic swimming after lunch and ends getting off the water in the dark.
But I would repeat it again tomorrow in flash.

Taking my 13yr old son on his first grade II trip on the Usk.

After a bad capsize one summer he wasnt that keen... then after the first rapid he could not stop smiling and even laughing when he caught an edge. Fantastic day, in my memories forever...and his!

Happy paddling in 2013!

Thanks for reminding me Dan! I was torn between first time on the Upper Dart, something in my first trips to the Alps or Scotland, then I realised...
Best of the year was a low level Usk Sennybridge to Aberbran farm in March.
Why on earth?!
Because it was my first time back on WW after my year out, and it was just so much fun being out again when I'd thought I might never get back kayaking at all. Thanks to the Heart Hospital for making it possible, and Clare T for the picture: don't get many of me!

Toss up between a high (at last) Troutbeck and my first paddle down the Amot gorge. Memories like this make me wish I could boat on quality rivers everyday of the year!

A solo run of the Aberglaslyn gorge on Christmas day, I'd never paddled it before and it went super sweet. Happy days!

The Esk from near Houlsyke to Egton Bridge. Never done it before and it was a different style of trip than I'm used to.

Oops just realised that was 2011!
So, it has to be my 2nd low level run of the Upper Dart with Chris Eastabrook and 2 UD newbies at Rivers Source in November. Made me realise how much I'd achieved with getting good miles under the belt. Smiling all the way, seeing some lines, although I still didn't paddle Euthanasia and Surprise Surprise. Decided to leave those for another time, but rather pleased with the photo taken at Lucky Tor in Simon Westgarth's round up of the event!

Either a first successful Dart Loop in the Bell Prospector, or a wonderful day on Loch Affric in the autumn, in perfect mirror conditions.

Back in what feels like the oh so long ago monsoon like summer.

Finished work, got picked up by a mate to head on down to Trent Lock to enjoy perfect levels thanks to all the unseasonal(?) summer rain.

You can't get much better than an evening messing around with friends, carving on a glassy wave whilst it being warm enough to wear a short cag and light enough to paddle until past 9pm.

It beats the feeling of throwing myself off a waterfall hands down.

Got several stand outs, one has to be a Summer time stanley session with the group of people who taught me how to paddle, all relativley uninjured for a change! :)

Low water run down the classic Triple Step to Right Angle Falls on the Etive, first time doing any pool-drop stuff, fantastic.
