Archimedes v Pelton?

Post by Glyn B »

Can anyone explain why Archimedes screws are used for electricity generation rather than a Pelton wheel?

Pelton wheels are used in high head of water applications (generally with low flow), archimedes screws are used in low head of water applications (generally with high flow).

Pretty much, horses for courses, the Archimedes screw is not the only option for low head, but it is less sensitive to 'suspended solids', which is why it can be commonly found in sewage works and other similar applications.
