2012 Easter Corsica Kayak Sessions Festival cancelled.

Post by Kayak Session » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:14 am

Breaking news - Corsica Kayak Sessions Festival cancelled.
Friday March 30th
10 days away from the 2012 Corsica Kayak Sessions, organizers decide to cancel this year's event due to extremely low water-levels, and very little hope that any significant rain will come up in between now and then.
Despite solid snow pack over the winter, unusual warm winter in this area, led to early snow melt - we were hoping for the situation to change, (because things are changing fast in Corsica), but we feel that it is wiser to warn everyone that planned on coming, since Corsica is not your next door paddling destination, that there is almost nothing to be paddled out there at this stage.
Paddlers currently on the island reported a near desperate situation, as a consequence we do not feel like asking everyone to come only to realize what we knew days before (today)...
For those willing to come anyway, Milou's campsite will off course be open, and Corsica is still an incredible place, but not for whitewater this year.
The general situation for paddling at the moment on europe's mainland is very dodgy - people may want to check out the Briançon area (Guil Guisane, Durance, Ubaye area) with no security on weather and waterlevels, Austria has got some areas with water too...
Please pass the word around and share this information.
Thank you, sorry, and see you hopefully next year!

Thanks for the information.

The situation in north-east Italy is also dire. The snow pack is terrible, warm weather is frittering away what little snow there is, and we're in the middle the worst drought for 22 years. I've heard that the situation in Piemonte is not quite as bad, but I'm also expecting a poor season there.

Loading up my flip-flops and beach towel.

I would imagine someone will say something about climate change soon.

Probably not, because Switzerland and Austria are buried under snow, as Croft keeps telling us!

Looks like I'll be hanging out in my mates beach house outside Toulon then - maybe I'll bring my Bike. Flights are all paid for so let's move on to plan B!

That's a pain. Was looking forward to it.

Is there likely to be much running in val sessia or aosta valley? Or what regions of Austria should we look at?

Anything else that could go either?

Worst case scenario, anywhere left worth skiing or is it too late in the season?

Yes this is bad news - it was after a series of years like this that Corsica 'went out of fashion' in the 90s.

In terms of alternatives, if it stays really hot like it is now we might get some early snowmelt kicking in over easter, even in the central high Alps. We have been paddling snowmelt in the Jura and pre-Alps for the last couple of weeks already - but that won't last indefinitely.

The Sesia at Campertogno is currently at 0.31 which is pretty low - there is not a great deal of snow in that area this year. It is probably a bit too early for Aosta apart from a couple of limited runs.

We also have the ferry booked for Corsica and will probably go there anyway on the chance of some rain - and if it doesn't, well guess we'll just have to do something else instead!

There's almost nothing running in Italy:

Austria still looks too low to me.

So Italy looks like it's off of the cards. Does anyone know what the Briancon area is like at the moment. Is it worth going to find some water there or will it be too high/low? Me and some friends were booked with ferries for Corsica and are now looking for a change in plan to still get some kayaking in.

Any thoughts/advice would be really helpful
Thanks

Raph Thiebaut who lives is Briançon said that with early melt and super warm weather for the season, rivers are running on "august levels" therefore paddle-able out there( he just paddled Guil and the Durance gorge...) however at that time of the year, the weather can turn quick and it could snow in a week... at the same time if the weather sucks there, there must be some skiing left...
As for Corsica, it is still out there for everything else but WW kayaking. And with someluck weather changes dramatically and rain could come, we never know - on our side we chose to warn everyone that the conditions are really bad at the moment, and thought it was unfair to wait the last minute to say "sorry everyone" this is mother-nature...
We are really gutted though. Sorry all to create the hype, and let you down on that one!

It's going to be low altitude snow melt or rain in the south or western Alps for any paddling. For the northern front range along the border of Austria and Germany, it prime right now. That's not Landeck, but the lower mountains to the north, along the whole of that ridge.

Is there a guidebook for that area or (even better) an online guide around?

Oh yeah :D

More on the way this week apparently too! Plenty of good skiing still to be had this season.

Travo & Rizzanese were run Friday & Saturday, low yet ok. 30-40mm rain due this week. Plus some 65cm snow at 2000m on the north facing slopes left from winter.

Hi All

Info from a good friend of mine on the Island today, He said they did the Travigneno today on a Medium/low level and he said there is still a bit of snow up on the mountains. Hes going to check out the Taravo and Rizzanese tommorrow east side, so will keep you updated.

Rain is predicted as Simon said over the next couple of days but things are uncertain for next week.

Theres hope yet for all those booked to go next weekend including me.

Cheers

Two of us are flying to Nice tomorrow, getting the ferry into Bastia for 21.00 on Saturday.
Sadly no longer being met by boats, but still going with an intention for a bit of walking, biking, sliding down rocks on our backsides, beer gardening, or whatever the appropriate alternative may be!

Probably going to end up hiring a car, but on the slightest off chance anyone else is in an equally strange situation and has spare car seats, or wants to fill ours, or even just join forces, get in touch.

Today:

Middle Vechio - Do-able and fun enough at the grade but a bit boney.

Tavignano (Campsite to Road bridge)- Low but not boney. Excellent at the grade today (3). Stunning gorges. 130 on gague.

Rizanesse was 30cm too low, didn't paddle it.

In addition to Rhod's list...

Taravo (brill!) and a bit of the Asco. Also plenty of action at Cap Corse. Am now back in my kitchen in Wales after a bit of an interesting journey home.

Well in the end the week was far from catastrophic with the following rivers more or less runnable at different times (it did rain a few times):

Upper-Golo, Middle-Vecchio, Tavignano (but a bit smelly), Travo, Fiume Orbo (but very bony), Taravo (all 3 stretches well worth the effort, particularly the put-in from Bains de Guitera), Asco. Some of our team also paddled the Upper-Vecchio, Restonica, Upper-Rizzanese, Upper-Fiume Orbo - but you had to really like slapping granite and not be too worried about your back.

Apparently the Middle-Vecchio was even running at 170 one day last week and provided a high-adrenaline run.
